I’ve been wanting to go to Tanya’s in Chelsea ever since they first opened their doors.
I keep seeing their beautiful creations popping up on Instagram and I just couldn’t wait to get my hands (or my mouth) on them.
So, we popped over this weekend to check it out and see what all the hype is about.
It’s tucked away in a quiet corner of Chelsea, so first off you feel very pleased with yourself for having found it. Well, that might just be me, as I get lost every time I leave the house.
But once you’ve found it, gosh are you rewarded. Fridges filled with brightly coloured creations, and a rainbow of pressed juices, the bar lined with an abundance of fresh fruit and walls filled with flowerpots and plants. It’s cool.
Not trying too hard cool. But just cool. Like Danny from Grease. (Yes I still think he’s cool. Hello…he carries a comb around with him)
The menu sort of blows you away. It’s unbelievably creative and clever. It’s a clever sort of juxtaposition where they simply list standard menu items which are as we know them, inherently unhealthy. The menu reads lasagne, thai curry noodles, burger, taco, pizza. You get the picture, it’s the normal fare. Except that there is nothing normal about these items.
The way the menu is set out can be disarming though. I arrived a little before my friend and was ravenous, so I was desperate to order. I texted Anna and asked her what she wanted. She asked for the options and I just replied: burger, lasagne, pizza. She texted saying she was feeling a little worse for wear from the night before so definitely the burger. I didn’t mention that the burger was completely vegetarian and raw, and consisted of onion bread and marinated veggies…I thought it would be more fun that way.
That’s the thing about Tanya’s, you want to order it all just so you can see how they can possibly make all these unhealthy dishes not only nourishing and healthy, but also completely raw.
We started with some drinks whilst I pondered the menu and Anna made her way across London.
I opted for a Green juice. An alkalising juice of kale, spinach, lemon, apple and cucumber.
I ordered a smoothie for Anna, which had “my doctor juice” in it which I thought seemed appropriate. It was delicious and had bananas, dates and almond milk in it, adorned with a scattering of dried rose petals.
Then the mains arrived. Lasagne for me, and a burger for Anna.
The Lasagne was incredibly delicious. It consisted of layers of marinated mushroom meat, with pesto, marinara sauce, fermented cheese and courgette. As everything at Tanya’s is dairy free, I think the fermented cheese is a fermented nut cheese. I can assure you that fermented nut cheese is WAY more delicious than it sounds. For real. It’s delicious. The whole thing was beautifully light and full of flavour with a lovely contrast of fresh and crunchy, with smooth, soft and creamy. In fact, I want to eat it again. Right now. Please.
Now, to be fair to the burger. If you are expecting a meaty burger, possibly with a dash of melted cheese all contained in a doughy (gluten oozing) white bun…this burger could take you by surprise. Especially if you might be feeling a little hungover. But, to give it it’s dues, each element was very cleverly thought out and it was utterly delicious. The burger is contained in an onion bread, which made me want to rush out and buy a dehydrator. I need one. Desperately. But my kitchen is bulging and I can see my kitchen cabinets looking at me with pleading eyes…”No Margie, no more kitchen kit, please!”, they say. Ho Hum.
The only disappointing thing about our trip to Tanya’s was that we had to rush off so I didn’t get to sample any of the puddings. The raw orange cheesecake looked deliciously beautiful!
I had been eyeing the healthy tiramisu for a while and I was slightly miffed when they didn’t have them that day, but that’s just another great excuse to go back. Yippee. Don’t worry Tiramisu, I will get my hands on you.
I highly recommend a trip to Tanya’s. You feel a healthier, happier you just walking through the door!
Tanya’s also boasts Europe’s first ever superfood cocktail bar which sounds pretty awesome. With drinks like sweet potato G&T’s and walnut infused vodka, it definitely sounds worth a visit to sample the cocktail menu.
Tanya’s now serves breakfast from 7am, lunch from 11:30am and cocktails from 4pm.
